Virus for the Holidays
In the past couple of weeks I have had a lot of people, both work and home, contact me about virus infections. Some have been easy to remove, others not so much. But what made me stop and wonder was, why is this happening now? Is there a new virus variant out there I am not aware of? Actually all of the infections on the computers were not new. Some of the viruses were in fact from 2010, so why all the recent infections? My theory is that it is due to the Holidays.
With all the increased Internet surfing trying to find the right present, or making sure to get the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, people are going to a lot of sites, and even a lot of new sites. This increases the chance of getting an infection. And it isn’t even online shopping that makes you vulnerable. Clicking on links to see the latest animated holiday card, may give you more than what you bargained for.
So remember as you are surfing out there that while it is the holidays and it looks a lot like Christmas, it doesn’t mean the Internet is any safer than it was before. So update your antivirus definitions, question the links people send you, and watch out for which sites you go to. Otherwise you might just find a computer virus in your stocking this year.
